I have developped a system that allow some one with no experience in piano to play or entertain his or her family and friends after sixteen lessons. One lesson a week that is in four month you will be able to play and they will for their surprise ask how long you've been playing.
The learning experience varies with individuals. Some learn fast other take longer to assimil but the key to success is practice.
Anyone can open a piano or pick up an instrument and play it or learn how to. But certain aspect or technicality of that instrument must be taught.
A lot of people start out that way and later on realize they must get a teacher. At that point the work is harder for both, because you must work hard to quit any bad habit that you have developped at the same time the teacher work twice is much to make you accept the new one, the good techniques.
Playing piano involve a lot of techniques, body coordination, focussing (mental concentration), good eye sight and patience. Unlike most people think or know, it is a whole body activity. It is not just about your fingertips.
Of course you use your fingers but every knucles or phalanges, the hands, wrists, forearms, arms, shoulders, chest, waist, the legs from your posterior to the heels and the big toes. Your breathing when working on dynamic or trying to produce a special effect with a note. Your state of mind or your state of being for a specific music.

Again the key to success in reading is how much time you put into it. If you can hold your "guitare and play for 3 to 5 hours. Well, while holding the guitare read or work on it for half to one hour each time and you'll see the result. The other point is to don't be affraid to ask questions
